How Much Exercise Does a German Shepherd Need?
German Shepherds are a high-energy working breed originally developed for herding and protection. They rank among the most intelligent and athletic dog breeds, requiring substantial daily physical and mental exercise to stay healthy, happy, and well-behaved.
The general veterinary guideline is 90โ120 minutes of exercise per day for a healthy adult German Shepherd, split into at least two sessions. However, this varies significantly based on age, individual energy level, health status, and living environment.
Signs Your German Shepherd Is Under-Exercised
Under-exercised German Shepherds almost always develop behavior problems. Watch for: excessive barking or whining, destructive chewing of furniture or shoes, hyperactivity and inability to settle, pulling hard on leash, digging, and escape attempts. These are cries for more activity, not personality defects.
Risks of Over-Exercising a German Shepherd
While GSDs are hardy, over-exercising โ especially in puppies โ can cause long-term joint damage. German Shepherds are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Signs of over-exercise include lameness, reluctance to move, excessive panting, and behavioral changes. Always warm up before and cool down after vigorous sessions.
Mental Stimulation Is Non-Negotiable
German Shepherds were bred to think and problem-solve. Physical exercise alone is insufficient. A mentally under-stimulated GSD will find its own "enrichment" โ usually destructive. Include at least 20โ30 minutes of training, puzzle toys, scent work, or obedience drills every single day.
